This calculator is based on the most common age system. In this system, a person’s age increases when he or she celebrates their birthday. In most western countries, a person with a life of three years and 11 months will be three years and 11 months old, and will turn four one month later on their next birthday.

Depending on the culture, age can be expressed in years with or without counting the current year. For example, a twenty-year-old person is the same age as another twenty-one-year-old person. There is a traditional Chinese age system that means people are born at a young age and their ages increase at the Traditional Chinese New Year rather than on their birthdays. Despite the baby only being 2 days old, if one is born 2 days before the Traditional Chinese New Year, the baby will be 2 days old two days later.

For example, we count Feb. 25 to Mar. 20 as one month when the starting date is at the end of the month. If we consider Feb. 28 to Mar. 28 as one month, then the result will be one month and three days. However, there are two different methods for calculating the age from Feb. 28, 2022 to Mar. 31, 2022. In the case where we consider both Feb. 28 and Mar. 31 as the end of the month, the result is one month. In our calculations, we use the former method since similar situations exist for dates including Apr 30 to May 31 and May 30 to June 30. The confusion comes from the uneven numbers of days in different months.
